Clocks in Italy go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, and sunset jumps from about 18:15 to 17:15 overnight. By early December it is down to 16:38. The upside is plain: the fountains, the domes and the Spanish Steps are lit long before dinner, and an evening walk starting at 17:00 is already in the dark.
This post lists the sunset times through February 2027, shows which tours on this site run after dark and which of them really stop at the Steps, and covers the Trevi ticket hours and the cold.
The quick answer
Sunset in Rome is about 17:04 on 1 November 2026, 16:38 in early December, 16:48 on 31 December, 17:23 at the end of January and 17:58 at the end of February. The night tour (19:00 from Piazza del Popolo) and the Maximus evening walk (from the Keats-Shelley House) both stop at the Spanish Steps after dark, as do the later golf cart departures. The Carpe Diem evening walk does not go to the Steps. Bring a warm layer: winter nights drop to 3-5°C.
What time is sunset in Rome from November 2026 to February 2027?
Between 16:38 and 17:58. The earliest sunsets come in the first half of December; by late February the sun sets an hour and twenty minutes later.
Times below are for central Rome, rounded to the minute and calculated for the dates shown; timeanddate has the full daily table. "Fully dark" is the end of civil twilight, about half an hour after sunset, when the street lamps and the floodlights take over.
Note that the earliest sunset is not on the shortest day. It falls around 8 to 10 December, the week of the Immacolata, while the evenings are already getting longer by Christmas.

Do Rome evening tours change their start times in winter?
Mostly no: the operators keep their evening start, and the dark comes earlier. A 19:00 tour is a sunset tour in June and a night tour from November to February.
The night tour meets at Santa Maria del Popolo ("please arrive there by 18.45") and climbs to the Pincio terrace first. In summer that is a sunset view over Piazza del Popolo. In winter the sun has been down for more than two hours by then, so the Pincio becomes a night view over the lit domes, which is a different picture, not a worse one.
The golf cart tour runs several departures a day; on a sample date we saw 14:00, 15:30, 17:30 and 19:00. In December the 14:00 cart ends around 17:00, just after sunset, and the 15:30 one catches the last light and then the lamps. The 17:30 and 19:00 carts are dark from start to finish. One guest wrote: "The guide took us up on a bluff at dusk so we could see the lights of the city".
EcoArt's Pantheon and Trevi walk sells a "Sunset Tour (without tickets)" option; in winter check the start time on the date you pick, because a real sunset slot has to begin mid-afternoon.

19:00 from Piazza del Popolo: the Pincio at night, then the Steps, Trevi, the Pantheon and Navona.
Check dates for the night tour with the Pincio viewWhich evening tours stop at the Spanish Steps after dark?
The night tour (20 minutes), the Maximus evening walk (starts there, 15 minutes) and the later golf cart departures (15 minutes). The Carpe Diem evening walk does not go to the Steps at all.
The Maximus Tours evening walk is the one built around the square: it meets in front of the Keats-Shelley House, right next to the Steps, then heads to Trevi, Piazza Venezia, the Pantheon and Navona. Minimum numbers apply, so a quiet January night can be cancelled with a refund or an alternative.
On the night tour the Steps come third, after Piazza del Popolo and the Pincio, for about 20 minutes. One guest in December 2023 put it bluntly: "you go by the Spanish steps but not to the steps". You see them from the top or from the side rather than climbing them. The same 5-star review adds that "it WAS cold".
The Carpe Diem evening walk is cheap and well liked, but its route runs from Piazza di Pasquino past Navona, the Pantheon and Trevi to the Colosseum. If the Steps matter to you, pick another tour. The full side-by-side is in our tour comparison.
| Tour | Start | Spanish Steps | In winter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night tour | 19:00, Piazza del Popolo | 20 min, third stop | Dark all the way |
| Maximus evening walk | Evening, Keats-Shelley House | Starts there, 15 min | Dark, can be cancelled if under minimum |
| Golf cart tour | Several departures, e.g. 17:30, 19:00 | 15 min | Late carts dark; rain covers |
| Carpe Diem evening walk | Evening, Piazza di Pasquino | No stop | Ends at the Colosseum |
Do you need the €2 Trevi Fountain ticket on an evening tour?
Only to go down to the basin before 22:00. The ticket applies 9:00 to 22:00 every day; after 22:00 the basin area is free, and the view from the piazza above is always free.
Since 2 February 2026 non-residents pay €2 to enter the area by the water. Turismo Roma gives the hours as 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, card only at the fountain, with tickets also sold online, at civic museums and at tourist info points. Up to 400 people are let into the basin area at a time, and Romewise notes later openings on Monday and Friday mornings for coin collection.
On the night tour you reach Trevi at around 20:00 to 20:30, so your guide will usually talk from the upper piazza; if you want to throw a coin from the rim, buy a ticket on your phone first. Coming back after 22:00 costs nothing, and on a winter weeknight the crowd thins out. Our Spanish Steps to Trevi walk has the 10-minute route.

How cold is Rome on a winter evening, and what should you wear?
Cold enough for a proper coat: average lows are 3-5°C in December to February, and rain falls on 7 to 9 days a month. Layers, a hat and waterproof shoes do the job.
Long-term averages at Rome Ciampino (1991-2020, via Climate of Rome) give daytime highs of 12-13°C in December to February, falling to 3-5°C at night. November is milder, 17°C by day and 8-9°C at night, and also the wettest month. On a three-hour walk you stand still a lot, so dress warmer than you would for walking.
Wear shoes with grip: wet cobblestones and the travertine of the Steps get slippery. A small umbrella beats a poncho in the narrow streets. On the golf cart you sit in the wind but the carts carry plastic rain covers; a guest in October 2026 wrote that "once the rain started, our guide lowered down the plastic covers on the golf cart to protect us from the downpour". Another, on 1 January 2026, "really enjoyed taking it all in from the golf cart even in the bracing New Years Day cold". And on the night tour, one 5-star reviewer's "cold and rainy evening" still became "an enjoyable walk".
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 16.9°C | 8.5°C | 8.8 |
| December | 12.7°C | 4.7°C | 9.4 |
| January | 12.0°C | 3.4°C | 7.4 |
| February | 13.0°C | 3.4°C | 7.5 |

Starts at the Keats-Shelley House by the Spanish Steps, ends in Piazza Navona after dark. Max 15 people.
Explore the evening walk from the Keats-Shelley House Tour detailsWhich winter nights are busiest at the Spanish Steps?
8 December (the Immacolata), the evenings from the tree lighting to Epiphany, and New Year's Eve. Weeknights in January and February are the quietest of the year.
On 8 December the square fills from early afternoon for the Pope's visit to the Immacolata column, with barriers and closures; our Immacolata and Christmas post has the timetable. From late November to 6 January the tree on the Steps and the lights on Via dei Condotti draw crowds every evening, and weekends before Christmas are busy on Via del Corso too.
January after Epiphany is the opposite. Fewer tourists, short queues at Trevi, and small evening groups. The catch is that some tours with minimum numbers may not run on a slow night, so book one with free cancellation and keep a backup. Every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead. For the hour-by-hour picture, see the best time to visit.
