Spanish Steps tours compared

Nine tours sell the Spanish Steps in their title or photos. Three of them never stop there. Here is how long each one spends at the Steps, what it costs and who it suits.

The Spanish Steps are free and open day and night, so no tour sells you access. What a tour does sell is the route around them, the stories and the timing. That makes the useful question how long a tour spends at the Steps, and what else it fits into the same afternoon.

We read the itinerary of every listing on this site on Viator in October 2026 and noted the minutes it gives the Steps, the meeting point and the group size. Prices are the from-prices on that date and they move.

The quick answer

For the most time at the Steps, take the Tix & Tours walk from Piazza del Popolo: 30 minutes there, $56. To see all of Rome without walking, the golf cart tour ($102) stops for 15 minutes. LivTours ($148) and Maximus ($40, evening) start right at the foot of the Steps. Carpe Diem, the Vespa sidecar tour and some golf cart tours do not stop there at all, and the cheapest options of City Wonders and EcoArt leave the Steps out.

Which tours actually stop at the Spanish Steps?

Six of the nine tours here stop there, for 15 to 30 minutes. Two more stop only on their dearer option, and Carpe Diem's evening walk and the Vespa tour skip the Steps.

Which tours skip the Spanish Steps?

Carpe Diem's evening walk, the Vespa sidecar tour and some golf cart tours never stop there, even when the Steps appear in the photos. One night-tour guest wrote that you go "by the Spanish steps but not to the steps".

Carpe Diem's evening walk runs from Piazza di Pasquino past Navona, the Pantheon and Trevi to the Colosseum. It's a good tour with a 4.9 rating; it simply does not go to the Steps. The Vespa sidecar tour heads from Piazza della Repubblica to Trevi, the Pantheon, the Gianicolo and Trastevere. Some other golf cart tours sold in Rome start at the Colosseum and never reach the Steps.

Read the itinerary, not the title. Viator lists each stop with its minutes; a stop marked "pass by" means the vehicle or the group goes past without stopping. A guest on the night tour complained in December 2023 that the group went by the Steps but not to them, though that listing does show a 20-minute stop.

What is the cheapest-option trap on Spanish Steps tours?

The lowest from-price can buy a shorter option without the Steps. City Wonders starts at $23, but only its Highlights option, about $45, walks to Trevi and the Steps.

Two listings work this way. On City Wonders, the $23 option is a shorter walk; the "Pantheon & Rome Highlights" option adds the Column of Marcus Aurelius, Trevi and the Spanish Steps, and cost $44.63 on our sample date. On EcoArt Travel, the $33 Pantheon-only option says plainly that it "does not include Trevi Fountain, Navona & Spanish Steps"; the full walk with tickets was $56.07.

Pick the option on the booking page before you choose a date, and check that its description names the Spanish Steps. The prices on this site use the from-price, so read the option names as carefully as the number.

Which Spanish Steps tour is best if you don't want to walk much?

The golf cart tour. Three hours in an electric cart for up to 14 people, with stops at the Spanish Steps, Trevi, the Pantheon and St Peter's Square, plus a gelato.

WHEEL TOURS' golf cart tour is the most booked tour on this site, rated 4.9 from almost 2,000 reviews. It starts at Via Urbana 40 in Monti, near Cavour metro, and covers the Colosseum, St Peter's Square and the centre in one loop. The trade-off: 15 minutes at the Steps, and the cart parks nearby, so expect a short walk to the foot of the stairs.

Guests keep saying the same thing: "It was the perfect way to see the city's highlights comfortably and efficiently without getting tired." If you have a bad knee or an older parent with you, this is the one.

Which tour is best for first-timers who want the Steps explained?

The Tix & Tours walk: 30 minutes at the Steps with a licensed guide and headsets, then Trevi, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, from $56.

This walk meets at Piazza del Popolo 7 and walks down Via del Babuino to the Steps, which is the best way to arrive: you see the twin towers of Trinità dei Monti grow at the end of the street. Half an hour is long enough to climb to the top for the view and come back down. Pantheon entry is not included, and neither is the Trevi basin ticket.

It is rated 4.9 from 113 reviews. Groups can reach 30, which is the main drawback; headsets help.

Which tour is best for a small group?

LivTours. Six guests at most, starting in front of Babington's Tea Rooms at the foot of the Steps, with the Pantheon and a gelato or coffee included, from $148.

The LivTours walk costs almost three times the big-group walks, and the price buys space: a guide who can hear your questions, no flag to follow and easy stops for photos. It is rated 5.0 from 172 reviews. The route goes from the Steps to Trevi, Piazza Venezia, Largo Argentina and the Pantheon in two hours.

Pantheon entry is not possible on the first Sunday of the month and on holidays, when the walk covers the outside only.

Day or evening: which Spanish Steps tour is better?

Evening, if you have already seen Rome by day or hate heat. The night tour starts at Piazza del Popolo at 7 p.m. with the Pincio sunset; Maximus starts at the Steps.

Two evening walks stop at the Steps, both from $40:

  • The night tour (Your Way Tours, 4.3 from 249 reviews) climbs from Piazza del Popolo to the Pincio terrace for the sunset, then walks to the Steps, Trevi and the Pantheon. One guest warned: "The only negative for me was the steep hill climb at the beginning." Another: "Bring a jacket bc gets chilly at night."
  • Maximus Tours' evening walk (5.0 from 14 reviews) meets in front of the Keats-Shelley House, right of the Steps, and ends in Piazza Navona. No hill.

By day you get the Steps in full light and the churches open. By night the piazzas are lit, the air is cooler and Trevi's basin area is free after 22:00. Our best-time guide has the hour-by-hour picture.

Is a Spanish Steps tour worth it?

Only for what comes with it. On your own the Steps take 20 minutes and cost nothing. A tour is worth it when it strings the Steps, Trevi and the Pantheon together with a guide who knows the stories.

Skip the tour if you are staying nearby, like to wander, and just want the view from the top. You can do the classic loop yourself in two hours: the Steps, ten minutes to Trevi, ten more to the Pantheon, five to Navona. Book one if it's your first day in Rome, if you want the history (why the Steps are "Spanish" when the church is French, who designed the Barcaccia), or if walking is a problem and the golf cart solves it.

Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing if the weather turns.
