Piazza di Spagna is a public square with no gates and no opening hours. The Steps are lit at night and you can climb them at 3 a.m. if you want. What changes through the day is the crowd, the light on the travertine and the queues for the shops on Via dei Condotti.
Below: the best hours, the best months, the dates to plan around in 2026 and 2027, and how long to stay.
The quick answer
Come at sunrise (about 7:30 in December, 5:35 in late June) for the Steps almost to yourself, or in the last two hours before sunset, when the facade of Trinità dei Monti turns gold. Late morning to mid-afternoon is the most crowded. The best weeks are the azalea display, 16 April to 17 May in 2026, and early December for the Christmas crib. Avoid the afternoon of 8 December, when the Pope visits Piazza Mignanelli next door.

What is the best time of day to visit the Spanish Steps?
Sunrise for an empty staircase; the last two hours before sunset for the light. The busiest stretch is about 11:00 to 17:00.
The Steps face west, down Via dei Condotti. That means the facade of Trinità dei Monti sits in shade in the morning and lights up warm in the late afternoon. Photographers who want the steps empty come at first light; those who want the colour come in the evening and accept the crowd.
| Time | Crowds | Light | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise to 8:30 | Very few people | Soft, the church in shade | Empty-staircase photos |
| 8:30 to 11:00 | Building | Bright, flat | Climbing up before the heat |
| 11:00 to 17:00 | Busiest | Harsh in summer | Shops on Via dei Condotti |
| Last 2 hours before sunset | Busy | Gold on the facade | The classic photo |
| After dark | Moderate, then quiet | Floodlit | An evening walk to Trevi |
Sunset from the Pincio terrace, then the Steps, Trevi and the Pantheon lit up at night. From $40.

When are the azaleas on the Spanish Steps?
In 2026 the Mostra delle Azalee ran from 16 April to 17 May. The city lines the Steps with azaleas every spring, usually from mid-April for three to four weeks.
The city gardeners have dressed the Steps with azaleas in pots since 1952, and in 2026 they extended the display to Via dei Condotti for the first time, with the varieties "Bianca di Spagna" and "Fenicia" (Turismo Roma). Dates for 2027 are not announced yet; they usually tie in with Rome's birthday on 21 April. Our azaleas 2027 post will carry them when they are out.
The flowers bring the biggest crowds of the year. Come at sunrise during those weeks and you get the pink steps without the people.

What happens at the Spanish Steps at Christmas?
A nativity scene goes up on the first landing, and on 8 December the Pope pays homage to the Immacolata column in Piazza Mignanelli, next to the square.
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December is a public holiday. In the morning Rome's firefighters climb a ladder to hang a wreath on the statue at the top of the column; in the afternoon the Pope arrives (Pope Leo XIV laid flowers at 16:00 in 2025). Expect barriers, police and a packed square from early afternoon. Our Immacolata and Christmas post has this year's details.
Through December, the Christmas tree in the square and the lights on Via dei Condotti make the evenings busy but beautiful.

What is the best month to visit the Spanish Steps?
April to early May for the azaleas and mild weather, or October to early November for warm light and smaller crowds. July and August are hot and crowded at midday.
- Spring (April to May): the azaleas, 18 to 25°C. The best weeks of the year and the busiest.
- Summer (June to August): highs above 30°C, and the stone throws back the heat. Come before 9:00 or after 18:00.
- Autumn (September to November): the light turns gold earlier in the evening, the heat breaks and the school groups thin out. Rain comes in November.
- Winter (December to February): cold mornings, short days, Christmas lights in December and the quietest weeks in January and February.
Is it worth visiting the Spanish Steps at night?
Yes. The Steps are floodlit and open all night, the heat is gone, and a walk on to Trevi after 22:00 means the basin area is free.
From about 21:00 the square empties of shoppers and fills with couples and evening tour groups. By midnight it is quiet. The sitting ban still applies, and the officers still patrol.
Two evening tours stop here. The night tour climbs to the Pincio for the sunset first, then walks down to the Steps; the Maximus evening walk starts in front of the Keats-Shelley House. Guests on the night tour noticed the difference: "Walking at night was nice compared to the day and the heat."

Golden hour on the Pincio terrace, then the Steps and Trevi after dark. Three hours from Piazza del Popolo.

Twenty minutes to climb up, look and come down. Plan an hour and a half with Trinità dei Monti, the Keats-Shelley House and a walk to the Pincio.
A sensible half-day: start at Piazza del Popolo, walk Via del Babuino to the Steps (10 minutes), climb to Trinità dei Monti, look inside, walk left to the Pincio terrace and come back down. Then on to Trevi and the Pantheon. Trinità dei Monti and the Keats-Shelley House has the hours for both.
When should you avoid the Spanish Steps?
The afternoon of 8 December, weekend afternoons in the azalea weeks, and midday in July and August.
Saturday afternoons are the busiest of the week: Via dei Condotti is a shopping street and Romans come too. Big events in the city, like papal ceremonies and the Rome marathon in March, also push crowds through the square. If your only free slot is midday in summer, keep it short, see the Steps from the square and spend the hot hours indoors in the Keats-Shelley House or the church.
Beat the heat with an evening walk: Pincio sunset, the Steps and Trevi lit up.
